Team Cyanosis has had to withdraw from Raid Bimbache due to injury. Team captain Clinton Mackintosh has developed a serious knee injury.
“The team is obviously disappointed,” says team navigator Nicholas Mulder.
“Clinton developed a knee ligament injury and continuing would not be in his best interest long-term. The extremely demanding nature of this race course has taken its toll.”
The team completed 140-kilometres of the first 160-kilometres bike leg having already accumulated about 5500-metres of climb since the start of the race.
“We had a good start and found ourselves in the Top 5 early on. At one stage during the first night, we managed to climb as high as second place for a short while, but then we started to drop back rapidly as Clinton’s knee injury worsened,” Nicholas explains.
The team is currently drowning their sorrows in coffee and hot chocolate in a restaurant in the village of Mollo. They’re waiting to be transported to a nearby transition by the race organisers.
“Race Director Antonio de la Rosa has to be commended for pulling a rabbit out of the hat at the last moment and saving this race. The course has been challenging but fair and definitely one to remember for the competing teams. Hopefully all goes well for the organising team for the rest of the race,” Nicholas says.
