Shane Raw fighting bad bugs

Adventure racer Shane Raw, younger brother of Swazi Xtreme organiser Darron Raw, is currently in hospital in Jo’burg. Current diagnosis is meningitis and septicemia but doctors do not yet know the how or what of it.

Just over a week ago Shayne started feeling ill and was in and out of hospital in Swaziland. He deteriorated over xmas weekend and was transported bu ambulance from his home in Swaziland to Jo’burg. On Sunday night he was in bad shape and under heavy sedation in ICU. Now, three days later, he is in the Cardiac Care Unit responding postively to treatment, although the doctors don’t know the cause of his infection/s.

Shane is doing much better this afternoon and he is also conscious and cognitive of his surroundings – he recognises people and is responding to them talking to him. He is expected to be off ventilation on Thursday morning.

His doctor is still waiting for results to come back from pathology but for now the good news is that Shane is improving with each day.

Shane is the captain of the Swazi-based team,  Aieesh.com. He is also a crazy kayaker. Shane has had a rough couple of months; he broke his left humerous during a waterfall descent in Iceland in July (which is why he didn’t race this year’s Swazi Xtreme).

  1. Fear not – as soon as he sees the current river levels he will no doubt recover even faster.

Here’s to the value of AR for toughening us up to deal with life’s little knocks.

  2. Shane is on his way home to Swaziland on Tuesday. He is pretty tired and slow – but this should improve with time. Docs have found no cause for his illness/es.
