A report just received from James Braid, support for Pierre Carter (RSA) at Red Bull X-Alps. The race started around noon on Sunday, 17 July 2011. Today, Thursday, is Day 5. Thus far Pierre has covered 478km. His Day 4 was massive with a whopping 96km on foot!
We’re now into Day 3 at Red Bull X-Alps and Pierre Carter remains in Top 10 (sitting in 6th most of today). News just in from James Braid, his support crew.
Tomorrow Red Bull X-Alps starts and Pierre Carter is on the start line. Pierre and James Braid (his support) have been in the Alps for a week already, preparing for the race. This is one of the most challenging, adventurous and gruelling races around. This is an update from James.

On Saturday night I thought, “You’ve got to be kidding! Why am I doing this race?”. A cold front came through on Thursday night and it has been icy cold since. Saturday night was no exception and I dreaded having to wake up before six to get on the road to take part in this year’s third Kinetic Adventure Sprint.
I could hardly believe that 72 runners would brave a navigation event, at night and in the dead of winter. But they did and within minutes of the start they were warmed up and running through the suburbs surrounding Zoo Lake.
Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, a MATES man had the wonderfully crazy idea to start adventure racing. He found 3 other willing MATES and chose Expedition Africa – the longest, toughest one of the lot as their virgin trip. Yes, children, he was a little bit crazy… This is their story in their own words.

Team Dewpoint were super excited for Expedition Africa this year, Kelly and I were doing our second 500km expedition AR after completing Bull in 2008 and it would be the first 500km for Kev and Mark. Kelly (who is South African but plies her trade in Aus) flew out for the race and spent a couple of days with us in Joburg getting all her gear together.
Leaving Johannesburg late on Friday afternoon, we practiced sleep deprivation by driving through the night, arriving at Onrus caravan park around 11:00 on Saturday morning.
