Senseless Summer AR: Organiser’s report

Senseless hosted their second event and the first of 2011.  The Senseless Summer Adventure was held at Ezemvelo Nature reserve on 5th February 2011. Senseless Summer Adventure was a sprint race aimed at novices to the sport but had a number of OP’s to keep the more experienced teams on their toes.

We had 36 teams that started the race at 8h15 am (15 minutes later than planned due to the dirt road delaying some of the teams)  and had a 4:30 cut off time (which was reduced to 4h15)  after which teams received time penalties. Having the option of OP’s worked well in keeping the race together and not having teams finish hours apart. In fact all the teams came in within 45 minutes of each other. Every senior team collected at least one OP and the 3 junior teams performed incredibly well (One of which P.S. CUL8R ended up 3rd overall in the mixed category).

All teams collected an average of six OP’s out of a possible sixteen OP’s. Five teams collected all the available sixteen OP’s and gained the full 160 minutes (2h40) of bonus time that where available.  Two teams received 30 minute penalties for missing a CP (which they visited, but did not clip in their haste).  This made for an interesting result as they were the two top mixed teams (they eventually still finished 1st and 2nd).  Cyanosis dominated the race from beginning to end but where pushed hard by Vertical Horizon Adventure Sports who finished just 12 minutes behind Cyanosis and second overall.  In the ladies section the race was equally hard fought with Eager Beavers and Assitport Jets finishing in exactly the same time.  Eager Beavers took the win as they had collected more OPs.

On a funny note: a big thanks to Nic from Cyanosis for tubing to the rescue and helping me retrieve the zipline handles when 2 teams let go in the middle of the dam.  Thanks also to Mac who had our GoPro camera on for the race (we will release the video on our Facebook site once it has bee edited)
