Gauteng O season begins

The Gauteng orienteering season begins on Sunday, 24 January 2010, with a much-loved short-course event at the Jo’burg Zoo. As the first of the eight-event series, this Zoo event – held at a location that is familiar to many – is the perfect place for beginners (adults and children) to try this fun map-and-compass navigation sport.

Practical vs Sentimental

People are magpies – indiscriminately hoarding items that MAY be of use. And when we pack for races we tend to do the same, throwing in this and that ‘just in case’. I asked a number of adventure racers to confess the unusual items lurking in their backpacks and crates, whether practical or sentimental.

Make your own mini gaiters

Mini gaiters are easy to make, especially this basic design. You can sew these gaiters by hand (or even use fabric glue?) but they are obviously longer lasting if sewn by machine. Gaiters prevent trail debris (stones, sand, grass seeds, sticks) from getting into your shoes.

Finally, the Woodvale Ocean Race is set to start – today! After the initial delays (nasty weather) to the original early-December date, solo ocean rower Peter van Kets returned to South Africa, spending the festive holidays with his family. He returned to La Gomera days before New Year, anticipating an early January start.

Ray does a second take

Ray Chaplin, walking solo to Beit Bridge from CT, aborted his initial expedition in mid-December, 450 kilometres into the journey. Defeated by contaminated water (yes, still infectious after treatment and filtration!) and severe drought in the Karoo, Ray has spent the last three weeks revising his plans. He is now five days into ‘Take Two’.
