The YstervARk series is branded as back-to-basics, old school, hard core, simple adventure racing. That made me a little nervous – can I handle old school when I’m used to the post-Hano Kinetic era? I’ve seen pictures and heard stories of broken boats, hypothermic people, big mountains and this weird plotting-using-co-ordinates idea.

While Alec and I were attaching a red light to my bike the race started with a short run around the campsite to split the teams. We got onto our bikes in the top half of the field for LEG 1, 40km Cycle. My cleats had been left at home and I was riding with Wayne’s as he has pedals attached to his bike.

At last night’s metrogaine, held in celebration of www.AR.co.za’s 10th birthday, Nathan Thompson ran a phenomenal course to collect 880 points. He covered just over 22 kilometres in 90 minutes!
