It’s only four weeks until FEAT 2010 debuts in Johannesburg. FEAT (Fascinating Expedition & Adventure Talks) is a high-octane event where talk topics, presented by celebrated outdoor adventurers, include tales of expeditions, practical advice on sponsorships, technology and making a career as an adventurer.
South African adventurers are accomplished; many of their achievements are documented as World firsts and records. Our adventurers have traversed and circumnavigated countries and continents; they’ve rowed across oceans; scaled mountains; cycled extraordinary distances and descended rivers.
A team of South African adventurers will be embarking on the journey of a lifetime as they set out to climb and paraglide from the top of the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. If successful, the team will be the first to paraglide from all seven peaks.
The 7Summits7Flights team of Pierre Carter, Marianne Schwankhart and Peter Friedman were prevented from climbing and then flying off Denali, Alaska, earlier this week.
Pierre Carter, Marianne Schwankhart and Peter Friedman left yesterday, Monday 7 June 2010, for Denali, the first of the seven mountains to conquer for their 7Summits7Flights initiative. This trio aims to climb to the summits of the highest mountains on each of the seven continents and to paraglide their descent from the summit.
With her successful ascent of Mt Everest this morning, Mandy Ramsden has become the first South African woman to bag all Seven Summits. According to the Adventure Consultants website, she topped out around 07h45 (Nepal time) on Saturday, 22 May 2010.
In the next few days Mandy Ramsden may be South Africa’s first women to summit the big Seven. Climbing with the New Zealand outfit, Adventure Consultants, she’s currently at Camp 2 and getting ready for a summit bid between 21 and 24 May.
So there’s this guy, Rob Forbes, who left the UK in October last year on an expedition to South Africa with the ultimate intention of watching England in the World Cup. Rob’s 20,000km adventure is a self-styled ‘triathlon’.
Everest season is well underway with some successful summits last week. A bunch of South Africans are sitting on the mountain, waiting for a more sustainable weather window to open before making their summit attempts.
